Anti-infectives and Virology
Abbott has a history of leadership in anti-infectives dating back to the 1930s, including its role as one of five pioneers to start commercial production of penicillin in 1941. We've developed and launched a large number of important antibiotics. In addition to developing the first licensed test to detect HIV antibodies in the blood, we also have launched HIV drugs.
Our commitment continues today with efforts to discover compounds that fight disease through new and more effective mechanisms. Our current research includes efforts to discover highly effective therapies for hepatitis C and HIV. In addition to pharmaceutical efforts, Abbott is also working on diagnostics for HIV.
