Abbott has helped to create the modern diagnostics industry through the company's commitment to developing first-of-a-kind products and significant technological advancements to improve patient care and lower overall health care costs. Abbott is a global leader in in vitro diagnostics. The cornerstone of this business is immunodiagnostics, the science of measuring the body's antigen/antibody reactions to detect diseases and other medical conditions and assess the general health of patients. Our laboratory diagnostic products include ABBOTT PRISM blood screening systems to detect infectious agents; ARCHITECT clinical chemistry instruments and reagents to measure various indicators of a patient’s health; CELL-DYN hematology systems that perform sophisticated blood cell analyses; immunodiagnostics instruments that analyze antibody/antigen reactions to detect diseases, and many more. Molecular Diagnostics
Abbott is also investing significantly in the rapidly growing area of molecular diagnostics – the analysis of DNA, RNA and proteins at the molecular level. These tests and advanced instrument systems provide physicians with critical information based on the early detection of pathogens and subtle changes in patients’ genes and chromosomes, allowing for earlier diagnosis, selection of appropriate therapies and monitoring of disease progression. In short, these technologies provide the tools to find a medical condition faster and treat it more effectively.
Our molecular diagnostic work is focused on four critical areas: oncology, infectious diseases, pre- and post-natal testing and organ transplantation.
Our product portfolio includes the PathVysion HER-2 DNA Probe Kit that detects the HER-2 gene in breast cancer patients. Also available is UroVysion, a DNA probe assay approved for use as an aid in both the initial and recurrence diagnoses of bladder cancer in patients.
